Talking About NiMH Batteries

As you acquire more portable electronics in your life, you will find yourself purchasing more and more alkaline batteries that can begin to put a real dent in your bank account when you begin to see how fast your digital camera uses the batteries down to nothing.

You might even give the "Ultra" or "Updated Formula" alkaline batteries a try thinking they might be substantially stronger and last longer. Alkaline batteries, even with their updated designs, still are not capable of fully meeting the high power demands of modern day electronic devices.

The environmental impact of alkaline batteries can't be ignored. Unfortunately, the majority of people simply toss their batteries when they no longer have a charge and this has a very negative impact on the environment when you add up the number of batteries that go into landfills each year, even with updated methods of producing disposable batteries with low to no mercury used in the production, which ends up in landfills and find their way back to the water supply and grasses that are consumed by animals and wind up in the food chain back to the battery owner.

Using rechargeable NiMH batteries will provide the power you need for longer use of your portable electronics such as a digital camera or multi-disc DVD or CD player. You will get a much longer time per use off one charge and you don't have to replace the battery with a new one, you can simply recharge the battery. Many people have one battery charging while one is in use and that way they always have a fresh battery waiting.

Frequently, you will hear that you cannot use NiMH batteries in the place of alkaline for certain portable electronics because the voltage is slightly less for the NiMH battery. What you need to remember is the voltage that is measured for the alkaline is the measurement when the battery is fully charged. As they lose power quickly in a high drawn application, your NiMH battery will actually be delivering a higher and more constant amount of power to your electronics.

NiMH batteries are a great alternative to using disposable alkaline batteries. If you haven't already made the switch to environmentally friendly battery products, get educated and make the change today.
